Fun at Trunk Bay, St John, US Virgin Islands

Without a doubt one of the most beautiful beaches on Earth. If you’re not as convinced as possible with that claim, the National Geographic Society can certainly back it up. Trunk Bay in St John, US Virgin Islands also ranked high as one of the most photographed beaches. Why not? Imagine a quarter-mile stretch of powder-soft white sand, swaying palm trees and lush greenery, and of course, crystal clear, warm waters. And that’s not good enough for you, take its gentle waves as bonuses.

Snorkeling in Trunk Bay is exciting for enthusiasts and casual snorkelers alike. There is an underwater snorkeling trail just offshore that is located in the center of the rising inlet of the bay. Fifteen underwater plaques identifying all the corals and colorful fish that inhabit the bay can be found along the 675-foot-long trail. One of the regulars that never fails to capture the amazement of divers is the leatherback sea turtle, which can grow up to 9 feet and weigh up to a ton.

Snorkel equipment rental is available on the beach through the National Park Service. Facilities such as showers, toilets, changing rooms, picnic tables, public telephones and a snack bar also add to the comfort of its visitors. For those who want to sightsee above the water, a drive to the historic Annaberg Plantation can do the trick. This is just one of 25 more plantations on St. John that were active in the late 18th century. Access to this historic part of the mills is included in the $4 admission fee.

If you’re in the mood for dining and shopping, a short drive to Mongoose Junction is all you need. Just 3 miles southwest of Trunk Bay, this shopping strip is home to cheap souvenir shops selling everything from the charming to the bizarre duty-free. The Mongoose Junction is also where you can find the best restaurants in the entire Caribbean. Experience delicious grilled lobster and other seafood fresh from the sea, as well as spicy West Indian cuisine like the famous Chicken Roti and of course the local rum.

Don’t forget to put Trunk Bay on St. John on your adventure list the next time you head to the US Virgin Islands. Experience with your family and friends images of perfect beaches, idyllic snorkeling, the best shopping, good food and good times.
