The many costume styles of the 70s

A party that is based on the theme of 70s costumes could be a great idea. Imagine a house full of your friends and family dressed in flared pants and frill-necked shirts. It would certainly be hard for people not to enjoy themselves in such a surreal and goofy atmosphere.

One of the great things about the 1970s is that there were actually a lot of different styles that came and went throughout the period. When you think of 70s costumes, what styles immediately come to mind? Do you think of the days of glam rock with its glitz and glitz? Or does it make you think of the Hippy style that was once such a popular image among young people? Perhaps you remember the days of the disco with its open-chested shirts and dance floors made up of brightly colored squares?

If you’re planning to throw a 70s costume party, don’t be discouraged by the fact that there are so many different styles that made up the decade. Use this to your advantage. Instead of being intimidated by which style you think best epitomized the 70s, why not pick just one of them and base your party on that? You could, for example, have a 70s costume party where all your guests dress up as hippies for the night. Think about clothes to wear, such as wide leg pants, flared pants, flowery shirts, and kaftans. Accessories can include items such as beads, headbands, and long wigs. If you really wanted to rock the boat, then you could use face paints to draw flowers on your guests’ faces. Maybe you could even have some burning incense sticks around the room (patchouli, sandalwood, or ylang ylang would be great to add authenticity).

Maybe a hippy event doesn’t sound very exciting to you. Think about what you and the people you invite would enjoy. Would it be more fun to have a 70s costume party centered around the disco scene? Outfits can be as fun to choose as they are to wear. Think about the image that was built for the ‘Grease’ movie. Can you spot any of your friends or family members dressed up as John Travolta or Olivia Newton-John? Other good places to look for costume and hairstyle ideas would be bands like Boney-M or The Bee Gees.

Maybe the Glam scene would be a better idea? Once again, try to imagine your guests in the appropriate outfits. Can you imagine your brothers, sisters, parents or friends wearing platform shoes and dancing on the dance floor?

Whatever style you choose for your 70s costume party, it should be very popular. There are all kinds of clothes and hairstyles from that time that have been long forgotten. Although in some cases this is perhaps for the best…
