When planning a safari to Botswana you are spoiled for choice and it can get very confusing if you are not familiar with all the places worth visiting.

The Botswana tourism tips that I am going to share with you today will help you plan a better safari by revealing some of the best places you can visit while in Botswana.

Top safari destinations

1. The Okavango Delta

This is Botswana’s flagship tourist destination and, IMHO, is second to none in terms of beauty and opportunities to see wildlife.

The Okavango Delta is world famous for being the largest inland delta in the world.

Some of the activities you can do in the Delta include mokoro rides, bird watching, boat cruises, fishing, horseback riding and elephant safaris.

2. The Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari desert covers most of Botswana. In fact, research shows that it covers up to 84% of the country. Although it is a desert, ironically there are many animals to see in the game reserves that are located within the desert.

These include the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the Kgalagadi Transformer Park and the Khutse Game Reserve.

Activities in these reserves include game drives, village tours, walks with the San, as well as guided nature walks.

3. Makgadikagadi Salt Flats

These salt flats are some of the largest in the world and, according to research, were once a very large lake.

Some of the attractions that you can visit and see in Makgadikgadi pans are the annual zebra migration as well as the flamingo migration at Nata bird sanctuary.

4. Chobe National Park

Of all the tourist attractions in Botswana, my favorite is Chobe. This includes the Chobe National Park and the Chobe River.

This area has one of the largest elephant populations in the world. There are literally elephants everywhere in this region.

Be sure to try the evening boat cruise on the Chobe River. The sunsets over the river are incredibly beautiful.

These are among the best places you can visit in Botswana because they offer the best game viewing opportunities.

If you can afford to visit all four, that would be great. However, you will have to spend a few days in each place to really appreciate its beauty.

On the other hand, if you’re on a budget, I’d suggest you focus on just Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta. These two offer the best of what Africa has to offer in terms of wildlife viewing and the experience of a true African safari.
