Computer Book Review – DOS

One of the biggest problems with computer users is that they don’t really understand how their computer actually works. They don’t fully understand binary codes, which everyone should understand. They don’t understand how the electronics work in their computer; they just don’t understand it, they don’t know how things like the motherboard, the cpu, the hard drive work or they don’t understand the software or how it all works.

Perhaps worst of all, they don’t understand operating systems and therefore are beholden to what they see on the screen and are fine as long as everything works and nothing fails. They do what the screen tells them without thinking or considering their alternatives, because they think they don’t have any, oh but they do, they just don’t know.

Everyone should understand their computer’s operating system, these things aren’t that hard and once they do, a whole new world opens up. And trust me, you don’t need a computer science degree to understand your computer’s operating system. Of course, if you want to learn about operating systems, the principles and philosophy of how and why they work, I suggest you start at the beginning and learn a little about DOS.

Now I would like to recommend you a very good book that will clear up a lot of the misconceptions that people have regarding operating systems and I think it is a book that will help you with the basics and therefore a great place to begin:

“DOS for beginners; no regurgitated experiences” edited by Robbin Markley; 1993
