Should students consider politics as a career direction?

With everything that has been going on over the past few years in the political arena, some students serving in student government and those majoring in Political Science or History may think about going into Politics.

People who choose that direction can be motivated by several things. Among them may be the desire to:

– Serve people in your community, city, state or country

– Do good and improve things for the people they represent

– Assume a position of power.

– Boost your ego

– Take advantage of opportunities for personal benefit.

To be successful, students must possess the personal qualities that seem to permeate current politics. Of course, some of these qualities can be good, while others tend to be bad for the people they represent.

Admirable qualities:

– Watch out for the best interests of the people they represent.

– Puts our country ahead of his political party

– Honest

– Reliable

– Hard work

– Good communication skills

– Intelligent

– self-assured

– Able to build agreement and support.

– Always concerned about the best interests of our country

Less Admirable Qualities:

– Is willing to tell lies about everything and anything

– Obfuscates information and facts to make them difficult to understand.

– Speak out of both sides of the mouth, whichever is convenient

– Puts their Political Party ahead of the People they represent

– Receive money in exchange for your support and votes.

– Allows lobbyists, special interests and PACs to influence your votes

– Sponsors bills that support big organizations but hurt average people

– Puts personal gain ahead of voters and our country

– Ignore the National Debt

– Ignoring the need for a balanced budget

– Favors the wealthy over middle-class workers

– Add PIG to desirable and important bills.

– Willing to inflate costs, as long as it benefits them

– He is willing to obstruct investigations to protect his cronies.

– Makes unsubstantiated accusations against opponents

– Play fast and loose with the facts.

– Denies responsibility for anything that goes wrong

– Quick to hurl insults at anyone who disagrees.

– Is not willing to work with members of the other Party on any issue

– Willing to blindly follow the dictates of the Party.

Of course, some people enter politics with the best of intentions, but end up being seduced by money, power, and personal gain. Others are pressured and intimidated into submission by other politicians from their own party. Sometimes, it’s not a pretty picture.

Those with political power seem to be motivated by one thing: staying in power. It seems that they are willing to do anything to achieve that goal. Either way, aspiring politicians should ask themselves:

– Are my political intentions good and honorable?

– Will I always put my Electors, State and Country first?

– Will I work to eliminate unethical behaviour, corruption and improper personal gain from politics?

Some students see a broken system and want to change the way things work in current politics. Other students may only see the personal benefits that can come from holding political office. What person is hiding in you?
