The different types of juicers explained

Centrifugal juicers are still here offering cheap and fast juicing, this is what most of us start our juicing careers with. The centrifugal juicer employs a high speed cutting plate and basket that cuts the product and extracts the juice from the pulp, a simple system and these machines can come with a huge feed tube that swallows the product. The disadvantages can be that the machines can be low efficient and take a long time to clean.

Horizontal Single Screw Juicers, These are the simple single screw or screw juicers that deliver ‘masticated’ style juice in which the product is ‘masticated’ and pressed against a perforated juice screen, the juice flows through through the screen and the pulp is retained and pumped out of the front of the juicer. These machines are relatively cheap, very efficient, easy to clean and live with, and deliver high-quality cold-pressed juice. The downside is that most of these machines have a fairly small feed tube.

Single Screw Vertical Juicers Sometimes called Verts or slow vertical juicers, these are the newest juicers on the block, they take the horizontal single screw design and turn it on its head to make the machine rotate in the vertical plane. These juicers have revolutionized cold-press or masticating juices, as they stay true to the idea of high-quality juice producing low RPM juice, but have larger feed tubes and gravity on their side, for which increases the speed at which you can make juice. I currently use a vert for my main juicer.

Dual Gear Juicers As the name suggests, these juicers have two long gears that rotate towards each other crushing the produce and masticating until it is ready for the auger stage to extract more juice. The Angel Twin Gear Juicer is still the highest performing juicer I have ever used, however it is large and a hassle to clean so I use my Vertical Slow Juicer for juicing every day. Twin gear excels at extracting every last drop of juice from root vegetables and leafy greens, so I tend to use my twin gear when juicing vegetables with a leafy green component for maximum extraction while I grow my own leafy greens.

That covers each style of juicer and which one I prefer for what kind of juicing job I’m doing. I believe the better your juicer is, the easier it is to get into the health-enhancing habit of juicing. Enjoy!
