With Qatar winning the rights to host the 2022 World Cup, this small emirate on the northeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula is set to become an increasingly popular tourist destination. Being a predominantly Muslim country, the appropriate dress code can pose a dilemma for women traveling there from other countries. As the way a woman dresses in Qatar can influence how she is seen and treated by the locals, here are some travel style tips and simple courtesies that will ensure that local values in Qatar are respected and that traveling there is a nice experience.
The key to dressing appropriately in Qatar is to consider what Qatari women themselves wear. They are completely covered from head to toe in loose, non-revealing robes, with their faces most likely covered by a veil. Although Qataris don’t necessarily expect Western visitors to dress the same way, what it tells visitors is that wearing revealing clothing is not appropriate in this country. It is considered more respectful to wear loose clothing that covers the extremities:
1) Take a look at the range of long cotton dressing gowns for women that can be bought in shopping malls, souks or even large supermarkets in Qatar. The selection of colors and patterns has become wider and more fashionable over the years. Wear these dresses on your visit to Qatar as they will be much more comfortable in the heat and you will be much better received by the locals.
2) Wear pants, skirts and dresses well below the knee. Shorts, even if they are knee length, are inappropriate, as are skimpy skirts. Don’t show any legs.
3) Leave any tight or low-cut clothing at home. They will not be appropriate for Qatar.
4) Keep chest and shoulder area covered. Bring blouses or shirts that are 3/4; or long sleeves. If you do bring t-shirts, make sure they are not tight fitting and have the appropriate sleeve length. Keep your stomach well covered.
5) Take a chiffon scarf that you can fold and keep in your bag and use as a head covering if needed or when visiting mosques.
6) Consider the type of swimsuit you wear to the beaches of Qatar or to the hotel pool. A bikini will attract unwanted attention. A full piece, with a modest cover-up when out of the water, will be more appropriate.
Women are expected to dress modestly in Qatar. And while no Qatari will most likely tell you that you shouldn’t wear something, that doesn’t mean they won’t be offended, which in turn may influence how they treat you. Taking the time to follow a few simple travel style tips, practice a few simple courtesies, and abide by local dress standards will not only help show respect for the local culture, but also avoid offending the locals.
