Excessive sweating: why does hyperhidrosis occur?

The body needs sweat to cool down when temperatures get too high. In nature, we see many creatures that use different methods to maintain a constant body temperature – sweating is our way of doing it. Unfortunately, some people experience excessive sweating, a condition known as hyperhidrosis, in which sweat levels are higher than necessary. The condition occurs due to overactive sympathetic nervous system.
Causes of hyperhidrosis

The central command center for sweat-related processes is the hypothalamus. The brain sends information to the sweat nerves which then transmit it to the sweat glands. When your system becomes overactive, your sweat glands produce large amounts of sweat, resulting in the condition known as hyperhidrosis. Different stimuli can contribute to this process. The most common include nervousness, external pressure, anxiety, stress.

Social interactions can also trigger excessive sweating, because they are the environments in which all of the factors mentioned above are activated. When a person suffering from hyperhidrosis engages in social interactions, the force of external stimuli increases, making that person more susceptible to profuse sweating.

Antiperspirants are useful for treating milder cases of hyperhidrosis, as they can lessen the negative effects of excessive sweating. By acting on specific sweat glands, antiperspirants significantly reduce sweat production and increase skin dryness in the areas where they are applied. Various products come in different forms, such as deodorants and medicines. Deodorants are the most popular form of antiperspirant, as they are easy to use and cause little or no discomfort. Deodorants are mainly used to treat excessive underarm sweating.
Treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis

One of the most effective chemical compounds used for the treatment of hyperhidrosis is aluminum chloride. Used in higher concentrations, Aluminum Chloride has a faster impact on the sweat glands, reducing their excessive production. One of the antiperspirants that use Aluminum Chloride with success is Drysol, a good option for people who suffer from mild forms of axillary hyperhidrosis. Drysol reduces the amount of sweat generated by the armpits, but it can also cause skin irritations if used excessively. Drysol application works best at night, when sweat glands show reduced activity, and long-term results may show some improvement in excessive underarm sweating.
