In the past, when you thought of a pallet, you thought of bulk shipments and warehouses that would be responsible for moving product from one location to another. Most of the people did not have their own platforms, and if they did it was because of the business they had. Today, pallets are much more common and may not be just for shipping anymore.
Of course, if you look in any shipping truck or in the back of any retail store, chances are you’ll see pallets. They continue to be a great way to move bulk goods, because forklifts can easily lift a pallet of goods and move them from one location to another, truck them in, take them out, and disperse them as needed. The pallets ensure that all the product can be moved together with ease. This is why you will usually see pallets on trucks and in the back of retail stores where they will be used later to move more products from one place to another.
Today, pallets are used for a wide variety of things, and shipping isn’t something most people do with a pallet on their own. Many are using second-hand pallets, the ones that have already been used for shipping, to build different pieces of furniture. In many cases, pallets can be made into outdoor furniture, as wooden slats make a great base for many different casual pieces of furniture.
Pallets are not only used to make outdoor furniture; some people are even making indoor furniture with it. End tables, platform beds, and even coffee tables are made from pallets. Furniture is not where the unconventional use of pallets stops. Many people are people who use pallets for gardens. Instead of having to weed a garden and separate all the plants, decks are used as free-standing gardens. The idea is to fill in the empty spaces with soil and then plant in those areas. The slats keep the plants spaced out, and it’s nice because there’s no weeding or crowding to worry about. And even better, when the harvest season is over, there is no need to break up large portions of the garden and work very hard to do so, rather one can simply pick up the entire pallet and throw it away. Or, they can just clean up some of the dirt in the spaces and store the pallets for next year.
As you can see, there is more to palettes than meets the eye. In the Internet-inspired, Pinterest-driven world we live in today, there’s no limit to what you can creatively do with palettes.
