The best college graduation movies

The time right after graduating from college can be both exciting and scary. On the one hand, you may feel a sense of immense pride in your achievement, and rightfully so. The future is open to you. On the other hand, what are you doing now? Here are four classic prom movies that tackled these themes and would be great to show off at any prom.

1. The Graduate (1967)

It’s hard to get more classic than this. Dustin Hoffman’s character just graduated from college and has no idea what to do. The only thing he knows is that he wants to do something… “different”. In most of it, he ends up lounging around the pool, much to his parents’ grief. He also has an affair with the neighbor’s wife (Mrs. Robinson) and ends up marrying his daughter. This film features a timeless soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel, perfectly capturing post-prom angst.

2. The fire of San Telmo (1985)

Here’s another classic movie, this time from the 80’s. This movie is about 7 friends who recently graduated from Georgetown University. All the famous Brat Pack stars come together in this movie: Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy are all here. This movie tackles common themes like politics, drugs, sex, and romance. Each character has a unique problem, and it is more than likely that you will identify with at least one of them.

3. Lost in Translation (2003)

Scarlett Johansson is a Yale philosophy graduate who is stuck in Tokyo with her new businessman husband. She doesn’t know what to do with her life and generally she just lies in bed or looks out the window all day. Eventually, she meets Bill Murray, who plays a minor celebrity who is past her prime and is a bit lost.

4. Into the Wild (2007)

This is a fantastic movie directed by Sean Penn. Chris McCandless was an A student who had just graduated from college. He’s not content to go the traditional route, so he gives away all his money, changes his name to Alexander SuperTramp, and begins hitchhiking across the United States. This is the story of a young man searching for his soul. Eventually, he decides to go completely “out in the wild,” to Alaska, to try and live on his own without a map or outside help.

These movies won’t necessarily cheer you up, but at least you’ll know you’re not alone. Have fun at your graduation party and good luck in your career after college!
