There’s a secret in Washington County, Texas that you should know

When you think of Texas, you may find yourself collectively thinking about stereotypical things like cowboy boots, long hair, and lots of people using the word “all of you.” And while these wacky little things can be fun, it can be easy to lose sight of the Texas things that really are something, and this is certainly the case in Washington County, Texas.

It may seem strangely specific to point to one of the many counties in the Lone Star State, but when you dig a little deeper into Washington County, it becomes quite clear that it is possibly the most important area in Texas.

Take a look at a map of Texas and find hidden Washington County in the eastern part of the state. The first thing that stands out is the proximity to some of the major cities in Texas. In fact, it’s just a short drive from cities like Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas. As such, Washington County has gone to great lengths to build its reputation as a resort for hikers looking to leave the big city behind, even if only for a short time.

Washington County is also steeped in Texas history. Washington-on-the-Brazos in the county is where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed in 1836 and is named after George Washington, one of the founding fathers of the nation. In fact, Washington-on-the-Brazos even carries the slogan “Where Texas Became Texas.” Visitors can also interact with the home of the last president of the Republic of Texas before he became a state with the U.S. History fans will be impressed, and even if you’re not the biggest history buff, not all days you have the opportunity to get closer to the background of such a unique state.

I would be remiss if Washington County’s staggering amount of modern flair and artistic prowess were not mentioned. The main thoroughfare in the area is US Highway 290, and as such there is an established scavenger hunt, aptly named # Adventure290. It’s an activity for the whole family that gives people the opportunity to meet the communities along the way, gather information for their ‘passport’, and a full adventure allows you to collect a prize! The area is also famous for its prominent role in geocaching in Texas. There is also the very popular WineTrail, which gives visitors the opportunity to visit outstanding and award-winning wineries. As if this weren’t enough, there’s also the Bluebonnet Trail & Wildflower Watch, as well as the #BrenhamArtWalk, which gives visitors the opportunity to explore some of the best mural work anywhere in the state.

For some, Washington County, Texas, is just another blow to the trunk. However, the truth is that these folks are missing out on some of the best historical, cultural, and artistic offerings the state of Texas has to offer. Certainly, there is a secret you should know about Washington County, and one that you will be glad to know about.
