How the sport of basketball began and how it has evolved

Basketball was first discovered by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian fitness instructor. It was first played in the winter of 1892 on January 20. Although it was made and discovered by a man, women soon began to practice this sport.

The sport is a team sport where there are nine players on each team when the team with the ball is trying to score they are trying to score on a hoop that is ten feet high and there will also be a center who is trying to deflect the ball but it cannot be a tending goal. While the other team is dribbling down the court towards the defending team, the defending team stands their ground waiting for the ball to reach their hoop. If the team with the ball scores, the defending team is given the ball and allowed to try for the basket unless the other defending team steals the ball, then they could run down the court and make a simple layup. Basketball is a competitive sport and when it is played, both teams should try to score as many points as they can.

The first basketball was a soccer ball that was white, since fans and announcers couldn’t keep up with the white ball, the ball was changed to orange in the 1950s. The court will be 94×50 according to NBA standards. The goal will be ten feet high with a steel hoop and a net with it. There will be 4 quarters with a duration of 12 minutes each. After the first two periods, there will be a fifteen minute break which is known as half time when the period resumes in the third period, teams switch baskets from where they are now vs. where they were playing before.

In today’s NBA, players must wear jerseys to match their teams and must have at least 9 players on a team. After the teams have been arranged, the game would start with a jump ball and whichever of the teams with the tallest person to jump would get the ball first hand to try and make a basket. If the team scored, the defending team would get the ball and be allowed to try to score against the opposing team for a score of two or three points, depending on where the shot is taken. If the offense misses the shot, then the defending team could try and win the ball back in order to get a point without having to let the offense score. If the attacker had missed a shot and the defense had recovered the ball, that is known as a rebound and it is playable.

There is so much more that can be said about the sport and this is the time of year when everyone tunes in to see who will make the playoffs. Watch your favorite sports channel to follow your team and make sure you don’t miss March Madness.
