On vacation in Jamaica

Traveling to Jamaica is a truly wonderful experience, largely due to its long, rich and cultural history. Many different peoples have contributed to making this island nation what it is today, starting with the indigenous Arawak and Taino peoples, from around 4000 B.C. Here are some tips on how to make the most of your Jamaican vacation by soaking up as much of the natural beauty and culture as you can.

what to eat

The national dish of this island nation, called ackee and saltfish, is a must-try. Ackee is a local fruit that tastes like never before and here it is combined with a mixture of dried cod, onions and tomatoes. You really won’t be able to find this food anywhere else, so make sure you try it at least. Another local delicacy, known as bammy, is a creation of the Arawak Indians. It is more similar to a pancake, but with more of a cornbread flavor and consistency, and makes it a very popular breakfast item. If you’re craving meat, you should opt for Jamaican chicken or pork, which will be sold at roadside stalls. Although it may be a little drier than you expect, this is done on purpose (Jamaicans tend to like their food a little more well done than we do), and it’s very tasty. If you’re in for a real culinary adventure, skip the fancy tourist restaurants and find somewhere special to try some Italian dishes. Ital is food made for practicing Rastafarians, and is prepared without the use of meat, oil or salt (but still delicious!).

what to drink

If you haven’t yet heard of the sensation that Jamaican coffee is making around the world, you’re in for a treat! Jamaican coffee (and Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, in particular) is one of the most desirable and difficult-to-import luxury items out there. When you’re there, make sure you try at least one cup. It is known for its incredibly smooth and mild flavor, thanks to beans grown in the cool, misty climate of the Blue Mountains. Chances are that when you return, you won’t be able to go back to your usual preparation! You should also make sure to check out interesting local queues. You can cool off with one of these frozen treats in exotic flavors like champagne, grapefruit, and pineapple.

to do

Definitely make it a priority to take a day trip to the Blue Mountains (if you can tear yourself away from the beach). This is a lesser-known feature of the island’s natural beauty, and it’s not something you want to miss. And, if you’ve already tried the coffee famous for growing on these peaks, you can enjoy a tour of one of the coffee farms and see where it all happens. Of course, don’t forget about swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and all the other must-do water activities on the beautiful beaches.
